Women and Girl’s Emergency Centre

Story

Women’s and Girls’ Emergency Centre (WAGEC) is a Westpac Foundation supported community organisation that exists to create safe futures for women and families. They provide housing and support in times of crisis, creating safety for women and children impacted by homelessness, domestic violence and systemic disadvantage. As a grassroots organisation, they actively work within their community to advocate for social change and address the underlying causes of domestic violence and gender equality. Each night WAGEC accommodates over 200 women and children.

Christmas can be a particularly challenging time for women and families who are escaping domestic violence and living in crisis accommodation.

Your support will help WAGEC provide safe spaces for women and children in crisis this festive season:

• $22: provides a pack of essential items like shampoo, toothbrushes and non-perishable food to a woman escaping homelessness and domestic violence this festive season.

• $50: provides one hour of case management to a woman living in WAGEC’s accommodation

• $156: supports one woman to attend a domestic violence support group and art therapy session

• $200: provides one night’s supported crisis accommodation and meals to a family this festive season

• $500: will fund a volunteer mentor to undertake 12 hours of training to become a mentor and support a woman toward financial independence

Westpac Group will also match donations from eligible employees through the group’s Matching Gifts program. Employees who donate from their pre-tax pay via Workplace Giving, will have their donations automatically matched. If paying by credit card or Paypal, you'll need to submit a post-tax donation via Good2Give to have your donation matched.

On any given night, we are accommodating about 200 women and children. 1 in 5 of our clients identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. 1 in 3 of our clients are escaping domestic or family violence. 1 in 4 of women were sleeping rough at the time that they began accessing our services.
